the past week had been quite painful for lily. she has been dealing with a lot in her life. her were killed in a car crash while driving home from dinner in hollywood. now, some people would think "oh, good my parents are gone. now i can do whatever i want without them controlling me." but that wasn't the case for lily. her parents were a huge part of her life. they taught her to appreciate the little things, and to love life. not having them around was very sad and depressing for lily.
since the accident happened a lot of things have changed in her life. they changed for worse, not for better. she had become another person. she developed an eating disorder, and began cutting her wrists and covering them up with makeup and bracelets. but that wasn't the worst part. in the past couple of days she had even thought about suicide. she was lost, and she needed help. but lily did not want to tell anyone. she didn't want them to know she was bulimic, or cutting herself, or had thought about killing herself. she just wanted to keep it to herself. she didn't even want to tell her friends.
lately she had been spending a lot of time at the beach. throughout all hours of the day. she would spend hours just sitting on the beach staring into the water, listening to the sounds of the waves, watching surfers, and watching the sun go down. that's where she was right now. lily had found herself a rock that she could sit on and watch the sun go down, and see all of the colors that came with the sunset. she had even brought a book with her. it felt like nothing mattered in the world. the weather was a little bit on the chilly side, and she forgot a sweater. but she wasn't thinking about that. while she was sitting she noticed a boy on the beach that looked exactly like her best friend kyle. lily knew that if he saw her he would come over, so she had to pull herself together, and make it seem like nothing was wrong.

Kyle walked along on the beach, looking around and picking up peddles and tossing them into the ocean. Normally at this time he would be surfing, even on the bad waves, but he had woken up early to go surging that morning and he was too tired to go out for another run. When he went surfing that morning did didn’t catching many waves as he was distracted because his friend, Lily, had been acting different. The last time he saw her wasn’t too long ago, and it wasn’t like she was acting really odd, just something had changed that was causing her to be a different person, so that was on his mind when he was out on the water that morning.
A vender called Kyle over to ask if he wanted to buy a bracelet but he shook his head no and kept walking until he found his favorite Pizza Shop and order a piece of pepperoni pizza. He got his food pretty fast, and then he returned back to the beach. He was wearing a crème waffle shirt with three buttons down the shirt, and then his favorite pair of jeans as it was getting cold outside. The wind was messing up his sandy colored hair, but he didn't care, as if he fixed it, it would simply get messed up again. In one hand Kye held a Mexican beach blanket and in the other his pizza plate. He didn’t really know quite where to sit because he didn’t want to get grains of sand in his pizza, or sit on the sidewalk that was dusted in sand. Instead, Kyle kept walking to the edge of the beach were the rocks were, so he could eat and look at the tide pools.
As Kyle walked and climbed onto the rocks he spotted, Lily, his friend curled up looking a bit chilly. He came up and sat neck to her with a smile. ”Hey Lily,” he said, setting his pizza on the rock beside him and his blanket folded up in front of him. ”You look cold, do you need this?” he asked, pointing to the blanket. Lily looked good, but he was still a tad worried about her.

kyle began to walk over, as she expected. kyle and lily had met when he moved to los angeles. she was seventeen, and he was eighteen. they instantly hit it off and became friends, or best friends. lily and kyle would spend hours at the beach. she would swim, and attempt to surf with kyle's help. over the years lily had developed a crush on him. it was kind of hard not to though. he was cute. but she never told him, or did anything about it. she didn't want to risk ruining their friendship. even though she wanted it to be more.
but as kyle walked over she felt different. she felt like she was going to throw up. she was nervous, because she was hiding things. she felt like her stomach was twisted, and her throat felt like it had a lump in it. she did not want him to find out about what she has been doing to her body, so she began to adjust herself. she fixed her bracelets so they were covering her wrists, and wiped under her eyes - just in case any makeup had fallen onto her cheeks. hopefully by doing that it would make him less suspicious, and not ask questions.
when she heard his voice say hello she let out a small smile. "hey kyle. how are things?" she asked as she watched him sit down beside her. her stomach growled a little when she saw a plate with pizza on it next to kyle. the last thing she ate was a sandwich for lunch, which she threw up immediately after. food couldn't stay down when all she was thinking about was her parents. lily smiled again as he offered a mexican looking blanket to her. she probably would have frozen if it weren't for that. "oh. sure, yeah. it is kind of cold up here..thank you." she said while she wrapped the mexican looking blanket around herself.

Kyle peered at Lily as squinted because of the glare of the sun, admiring her. She was pretty, without a doubt, but friends were all they were; for now and probably to eternity. He looked at her as she wrapped the blanket around herself to keep warm from the chilly ocean breeze, and he helped her wrap it around her. He began to take a bite of his pizza, and then heard a large gurgle of noises coming from Lily. Ky looked at his pizza, then her, then back to his pizza and set it back down without taking a single bite.
”Oh, would you like any?” he asked since he saw her eyeing it. He lifted up the limp paper plate and placed the pizza in front of her. ”You can have it, I’m not too terribly hungry,” Kyle said, wiping his hands together to get rid of the existing pizza grease from the cheese and pepperoni. Lily was looking thinner than normal, but maybe she just hadn’t been hungry, he decided. He loved Lily like a sister, a best friend, anything, and he never wanted anything to go wrong with her or for her to be unhappy.
”I’m good. You know, surfing, seeing that chick-flick Soul Surfer, lounging around,” he said, listing off the things he had done in the last few weeks. ”What about you?” he asked. The waves crashed on the rocks yards away from them, making a roar. He didn’t mind though, as it was just the water hitting a solid surface, which happened to be the rocks coated in moss. The sun was setting, and the sky was orange, just the way he liked it. He looked around at Lily, and then peered over to a tide pool a couple of rocks away, seeing a little minnow swimming around without a friend by his or her side. He couldn’t make out much of what was in the tide pool, but he was pretty sure he saw a crab or hermit crab of some sort. Kyle then returned his gaze to Lily and he simply smiled at her beautiful face.

lily stared at the pizza for a second after kyle had asked her if she wanted it. she didn't know what to say. she didn't want to take the offer because it would just make her feel worse, but she didn't want kyle to ask why she wouldn't eat it. she kept looking back and forth between the pizza, kyle's face, and the ocean, thinking about if she should take the pizza or not. before answering the question, lily's stomach began to make noise again. she knew she had to eat it. even if it would make her feel bad. "thanks kyle, you are so nice. i don't think i've ate since lunch time..i've been here pretty much all day. just soaking up the sun, reading..you know." she said while picking up the flimsy plate. lily stared at the pizza for a few more seconds, and then she lifted it up and took a bite out of it, and swallowed. as the bite of pizza made it's way down her throat she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, hoping it would stay down.
as lily ate her pizza in silence she watched the sky change colors. it was changing to orange, pink, and a bit of purple. it looked really beautiful. every know and then she would glance over at kyle and smile a little. lily's parents had once told her that the best kind of friendship is the kind where you can be sitting together in complete silence and not feel awkward, and that was how lily felt when she was with kyle. even with all of the problems that were going on in her life, she still felt a sense of comfort around him. like he had been her best friend since they were kids, when really they had only known each other for about three or four years.
as lily took the last bite of her pizza her bracelets on her one wrist slid down her arm near her elbow. her cuts were clearly visible to kyle. lily quickly pushed them back to her wrist hoping that he hadn't caught a glimpse of her wrists. "soul surfer, can't say that i've seen that yet. but i have seen you surfing a lot. you should have auditioned for that movie or something. you could have been made into a star..and then you could take me to premiers, hollywood parties, that would be so cool." she said before cutting herself off. lily had the tendency to ramble a lot, especially when something was wrong with her. "oh. i'm okay. i haven't really done anything exciting in the past couple of days..since the accident with my parents..i've been just working, and coming here." she explained. lily adjusted the mexican blanket so it was covering her more. since her wrist had already been seen she wanted to make sure he wouldn't notice anything else.

Kyle sighed when Lily said that he should have auditioned for the movie, taken her to premiers, and even let her meet celebrities, yet, that hadn’t happened in reality. Instead he just kept his surfing to himself for no one else to see. ”I’m sorry; I was just being too selfish,” he smirked, looking into her eyes. Kyle had completely forgotten about Lily’s parents death, but he didn’t really want to bring it up because it was such a touchy subject to anyone, and especially to Lily. ”Lily, I can’t even imagine how you feel, so I just want to say I’m here for you no matter what,” he said slowly, and then pulled her into a friendly hug. He would be a shoulder for her to cry on, as he knew that she would do the same for him.
A colorful band caught sight of Kyle’s eye as he looked to Lily’s wrist and saw a couple of bracelets there. He slowly took her wrist and twisted it around so he could see the bracelets. He looked at each one individually, but then noticed something behind it. A cut; little dashes of lines that went horizontally down her wrist, which could have mistaken her for a depressed person. Kyle’s eyebrows furrowed as he looked at the cuts and moved the bracelets out of the way. He shook his head and dropped her wrist down as he looked away to the ocean for an answer. What was Lily doing? The better question was, why wasn’t he asking her. ”Lily. What are these?” he asked in a stern voice, something he didn’t use often, but this was a serious matter. ”What’s wrong with you?” he asked, pounding another question at her. He pulled his knees to his torso and wrapped his arms about them as he pondered what was going on with the Lily he once thought he knew.

as the pizza began to settle in lily's stomach she noticed that it was actually staying down, and she didn't have the feeling of wanting to throw it up. it was probably because she was not alone, and was more focused on kyle than her own problems. which could be a combination of good and bad. she liked the feeling that she was able to forget about her problems and focus on what was going on in the moment..but forgetting about her problems wouldn't make them any better. it would probably make them worse. "no, it's okay. you aren't selfish. but still, you should have auditioned. maybe you could enter a surfing contest or something. i'll be there to cheer for you." she said before letting out a small laugh, which soon faded. "thank you kyle. you always know the right thing to say.." hugging kyle made her feel kind of uncomfortable. she imagined that he was comparing hugging her now, to before her parents died. when her body wasn't going through such crazy changes.
"ky, it's nothing.." she said in a quiet voice. she knew that he knew she had been cutting herself, but she didn't want to tell him. lily pushed kyle's hand out of the way and covered her wrists back up. "i was playing with my kitten and she scratched me. don' worry. i'm fine.." she explained. she wasn't used to kyle using such a loud, stern voice with her. it reminded her of her dad when he would get angry. lily stood up from the rock when he asked if she was okay. she knew that question would eventually come up. she didn't want to answer it. she hated lying to kyle. "nothing is wrong..i would tell you if something was wrong..and nothing is.." lily felt some tears forming in her eyes. but she turned the other way and pretended to look at something in the water so he wouldn't see her. she just wasn't ready to explain everything. lily walked over to the edge of the rock. she could feel a cool breeze of the ocean. she looked down at the drop, and quickly moved backwards in case she would have fallen. not that it would have mattered. she had thought about suicide a couple of times already. she wouldn't care.

Kyle was still puzzled by the scratch marks on her wrist, and Lily seemed upset that he had asked. He felt her hand shove his out of the way as she fixed her bracelets like she had OCD. ”Don’t lie to me, it only makes it worse,” Kyle said with shame in his voice. He looked the other way, disgusted that she would go as far as hurting herself. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a blurry blob sand up, which he assumed was Lily. He felt as if she was pushing him away, something he was not use to or ready for. Ky stayed sitting on the rocks, then turning his head to look at Lily. ”I can’t believe you would put yourself in danger,” he grouched, crossing his arms over his chest. Something was very wrong with Lily. Terribly wrong.
What Kyle didn’t get was why he read about people in newspapers and magazines about teens and young adults wanting to throw their lives away because for some reason they think it’s their only choice. Everyone had a reason to be on Earth, and it angered him that they would want to end their lives. True, Lily was having a traumatic time in her life, but hurting himself and the people around her was not the way to go. Not even go. ”Not only are you hurting yourself and being selfish, but you’re hurting everyone around you,” he grumbled as he watched her almost fall in the water, but then saved her. He flinched, as it was a reflex, but then curled up once more, wondering if maybe he was over thinking this. What if her kitten actually did scratch her? What if it got over his head and she was perfectly fine? Yes, that had to be the reason. Lily was perfectly healthy and would never do or think of such think. ”I’m sorry Lily, I’m sure you have an explanation for all this,” Ky said, his voice softening up, though still a bit tense. After all, he was still worried about Lily, whom had been his first friend in Los Angeles, and had really made him feel like a true friend and partially family.

lily turned around to face kyle. he looked pretty angry, confused, frustrated, just a bunch of emotions winded together. she hated seeing him like that. it made her wish her parents had never gone out in hollywood that night and got killed. she also wished that she could look the drunk driver who killed her parents in the face and give him a piece of her mind, and show him what it has done to her. kyle began to raise his voice more, and he said something about lying. "kyle you don't understand." she said in a quiet voice, trying to avoid answering his question. "i told you my cat scratched me. why can't you just believe me? instead of yelling at me like you are right now. i'm not dangering myself. " she lied. she felt horrible lying to him. but felt that she had to. if she told him he would probably try to send her to rehab or something, and she would never want to go to rehab.
lily could feel her heart pulsating in her chest. the beats were becoming faster by the second, and her eyes were swelling up with tears. for the past week she had just let her emotions build up inside of her, and the only way to get rid of them was by self-harming herself. cutting, as well as the bulimia was an immediate release. hurting herself made the thoughts less painful. "kyle you don't understand. my parents are dead! a drunk driver hit them so hard that they died at an instant. i saw their faces after it. they were not the same people. they were vegetables. it was scary." she explained in a loud voice followed by some tears. lily paused for a second and collected herself. "i can't do anything to bring them back. nobody can, nobody could. the doctors couldn't, nobody could. it kills me inside, literally kills me." lily looked kyle right in the eye when he said that, while wiping some tears off of her face. "i have to go. i can't be here right now.." she cried before looking at kyle one last time and sprinting off to her car and driving home.
